Make Mine Lime, Thoughts on Mexico
Living on Mexico time. To be honest, I’m more than comfortable with ‘relaxed’. The heat and humidity fill me, wandering, completely without purpose, soaking in small town Mexico on the Mayan Riviera.
It’s easy to be enchanted by Puerto Morelos. Colorful people, spectacular scenery, the smell of the Caribbean, the feel of warm sand, the taste of shrimp tacos. It’s a good place to get lost… be found. Bright flowers against white walls.
I find myself thinking a familiar thought “I could live here”. Dangerous words. Words that hint of never cutting my hair again, roaming the shores with talisman slung about my neck, my long grey hair in the wind and a sandwich board that reads “Madam Stella’s Palm Reading”.
Charging tourists outrageous sums to tell them exactly what they want to hear… “You will be happy in love, you will be rich, you will be successful, you will be… back in Toledo on Tuesday”.
Could happen.
It is suddenly easy to trade one’s bottle of wine for a bottle of good tequila… and a handful of limes. (Let the Virgin of Guadeloupe candle light my way!)
How is it that tequila could be sweeter south of the border?
On Sunday I depart for Belize and a much different part of the journey; off I go to sea Billy (arrrr!) in a very small boat. For the record, I prefer yachts of 39’ and over… but… in this case a kayak will do. I feel less than fit and am wondering at the wisdom of this ‘adventurous’ a journey when I am so tired, so worn.
But the sea — she heals. Warm tropical waters are the best therapy, next to the Mayan massage that still has me smarting. And there is the very distinct chance I will be extending my stay to enjoy more of the hospitality of Mexico — and her smiling people.
Until next time. Hasta Luego!
